Maast O Khiar

Refreshing and cooling summer side-dish. Swap the mint for dill and you’ve got yourself a Tzatziki!

Tip: this still tastes great with a 0% or low-fat Greek yogurt.


  • 500g Greek Yogurt
  • 1 cucumber, coarsely grated
  • Handful of sultanas
  • 2 tsp dried mint
  • Sea salt and black pepper
  • Olive oil (optional)
  • Handful of walnuts, roughly chopped (optional)
  • Fresh mint, roughly chopped (optional)


1. Prepare the ingredients as instructed.

2. Use a sieve (or your hands) to strain out the excess water from the grated cucumber — give it some welly.

3. Put the cucumber into a mixing bowl, followed by the yogurt, sultanas and dried mint. Mix well. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

4. Pour the Maast O Khiar into a more presentable bowl if desired.

5. Optionally, scatter the chopped walnuts, drizzle with olive oil (in an artistic fashion) and sprinkle on the fresh mint.

6. Cover with clingfilm and put into the fridge to chill until time to serve.
